Scottish soccer fans, nicknamed the ‘Tartan Army,’ have been making headlines all month long, drinking Boston dry and sharing the wonder of kilts with the rest of the world. Last week, they broke records while playing at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, becoming the loudest crowd in World Cup history by reaching an earsplitting 125 dB at the peak of their cheering.

Just how loud is 125 dB, you ask? Louder than a thunderclap, and enough to cause pain, according to Purdue University. And while the focus of our work is promoting the health and life benefits of quiet, there’s nothing we can do to stop soccer fans from enjoying the sport. And we wouldn’t dream of it. Instead, we dream of a world where fans can enjoy sports while protecting their ears. So if you’re in the mood for soccer, remember to bring hearing protection.
