On June 29, the Laguna Beach Police Department led a multi-agency operation across coastal cities — from San Clemente to Seal Beach — to target speeding and excessive vehicle noise, especially from modified exhaust systems. The Laguna Beach Independent reports that with support from neighboring departments, officers issued 190 citations during 138 traffic stops. Of particular note is that 36 violations were for loud exhaust systems, with one reaching 121 decibels and two vehicles referred for state-level emissions checks.
Laguna Beach Police Traffic Sergeant Thomas Spratt emphasized a zero-tolerance stance, citing ongoing threats to residents.
“Speed and loud exhaust violations continue to compromise the safety and quality of life of our residents,” Spratt said in a police report.
The collaboration was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety and is part of a larger, sustained campaign that will continue through the end of the year.
