QC Remembers Dr. Arline Bronzaft

Published by Quiet Communities

We mourn the passing of Dr. Arline L. Bronzaft, our cherished colleague, mentor, and friend, who died peacefully on October 29, 2025, surrounded by her family. A pioneering environmental psychologist, researcher, and author, Arline’s groundbreaking work from the 1970s onward transformed our understanding of how noise harms learning, cognition, and health. She co‑founded The Quiet Coalition, served as honorary chair of Quiet American Skies, and contributed prolifically to our blog, while quietly helping countless individuals and communities struggling with noise.

Arline combined rigorous scholarship with deep humanity. She believed that research must lead to action, and she worked tirelessly with affected communities and public officials to create real change – from helping New York City update its model noise code to developing noise education programs and authoring the children’s book Listen to the Raindrops. A steadfast advocate for women, social justice, and a more civil society, she often reminded us: if we truly lived by “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” the world would be far better – not just with respect to noise.

We will deeply miss Arline’s warmth, humor, insight, and unwavering commitment to a quieter, healthier, and more compassionate world.
