Helping Communities Find Solutions to Noise Problems
Quiet Empowerment engages stakeholders in respectful dialogue and actions to address harms, and influence and inform policies.
Public and environmental health are at risk from harmful noise
Noise can affect anyone. It especially affects low-income communities, people with autism spectrum and sensory deficit disorders, veterans with post-traumatic stress, seniors, and children. At present, there is no effective federal noise control program in the United States. The health of more than 100 million Americans is at risk.
“Calling noise a nuisance is like calling smog an inconvenience. Noise must be considered a hazard to the health of people everywhere.”
— William H. Stewart, former U.S. Surgeon General
Filling the void
The Noise Control Act of 1972 promises to “promote an environment for all Americans free from noise that jeopardizes their health and welfare.” Today that promise remains unfulfilled. Quiet Communities is helping to fill this void by assisting communities around the country and taking action when necessary.
