July 20, 2014, South Pasadena, CA. Michael Cacciotti, city council member and former mayor, announced at the city’s Green Living Expo, that Garfield Park will be the first municipal property in the nation to be quietly maintained with zero emissions lawn and garden equipment. “This park will be all green: no gas, no oil, no pollution – nothing toxic — all electric lawn mowers and leaf blowers.” The park, a 190,000 foot recreational space, has been beta testing commercial grade electric mowers and blowers for approximately one year. Tru-Green Land Care, a national maintenance company, was awarded the 5-year contract to maintain the park.
The Green Station, a local electric equipment distributor, as well as the American Green Zone Alliance, were instrumental in helping the park to go green. According to Dan Mabe, president of The Green Station and founder of the American Green Zone Alliance, “Tru-Green will use electric blowers and electric lawn mowers that rival electric car technology. Apart from no emissions, the electric equipment is 40% quieter.”
Gas-powered landscape equipment includes mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers and edgers, and is a major source of toxic pollution and noise.
